nope, read the stuff below again ... they are a completely different line of
motors ... the FE (Ford/Edsel) and the MEL (Mercury/Edsel/Lincoln) are
completely different.

Yeah some stores are terrible. There are some local stores here, the one I
used to go to had pretty good service, they'd come out in the parking lot
and look at things or let you try different parts etc. I've had them come
out with a whole box full of parts and just try them all :-) I bought so
much stuff there I couldn't keep track of all the receipts, and usually
they let me exchange stuff even without them. I realize now that I should
be very happy to have a store like that around :-)

Unfortunately the large chains are wipping out the "local" parts guys. These
are the same guys that allways helped and had alot of information. I used to
go to one local store and the guy was an old racer, everyone in town tried
to beat his car. He allways was full of information and was alot of help. I
think the Autozone that was a mile or two away killed his business.
Unfortunately they shut down the store......

It used to be ... for like 4 years ... the Edsel ... sheesh ... an
automotive legend for its looks and quality (or lack of) ... do a search on
the web, I think you'll find quite a bit of info on them ... they were only
made from 57?-60...

Famous for their "horse collar" grill ...

I'm not trying to be a smart ass,but I do know what my motor is,and an
FE,,just never heard that(mel) reference before.I am guessing that since
those motors were built in the 60's,they were FEs also?...dave

--------------------------------

I don't think so, Dave. The MEL series came out in the late 50's or early
60's, the FE series over-lapped and lasted into the late 60's, The 335
series (M-blocks) and 385 series (429/460) came out in 68, supposedly to
replace the FE series.
There's a 410 FE engine which is basically a 390 with a 428's crank. When
someone mentioned a 410 MEL engine, I just wondered if there was any parts
> interchangability between them. The 410 MEL and 410 FE would be radically
different block and head designs.

Edsel was a shortlived line of cars Ford put out in the mid 50s. Named for
Henry's (oldest?) son. For some reason they wern't very popular (Styling?
Reliability?). I've seen a couple and they looked like they were very
innovative for their day, and considering that they had a new line of motors
in them as well they may have been ahead of thier time. Look it up on the
web. I'm sure you'll find an entheusiast's site for the Edsel and it will
probably have pictures.
