fte:

i lost my brakes in the city of hills--san francisco.
like a scene from "bullett"...
after i came to a rolling stop against a curb,
i decided i need new brakes.
i know the brake system is fairly simple,
but i'd love to find a mechanic in the city (san fran.)
who can take the job and do it well.
i've a few recommendations from fte-folks on shops "around" s-f
but none actually in the city--
any recommendations/commentary are appreciated.

(SNIP)Looking from the rear of my 54, the passenger side of the bed is about 3/4 in. lower than the drivers side. I need to raise the bed. But if I just raise the bed it will raise the rear fenders which raises the rear mounts of the running board which will now be at a angle. Do I also need to raise the cab on the passenger side to level everything up? Has anyone had this problem? If so how did you solve it, or how would you solve it?

Is your frame straight? is the bed level to relation to the frame? Chances are your springs are off, and a front spring can effect the rear height too.

The following excerpts are from Dan Wentz's web site at: http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://home.earthlink.net/~dwentz/

Dan has been a very helpful guide and advise giver to me, his site is a definite "must read"

I removed the original rear leaf springs and installed new ones. It's very very bouncy now--the old springs were absolutely dead

I Also I called Sacramento Vintage about my springs. They couldn't figure out why one side of the truck is higher than the other but they said it's only cosmetic and I could shim the bed on 1 side to even it out or I could remove a leaf from the spring pack on the high side.

The new springs in the back feel really nice too--my ride is infinitely better now. Of course you know that in this hobby you don't have a success without another problem popping up and costing you money. At the urging of several FTE members I did some measuring to see why the truck is higher on 1 side. As it happens the front is also high now. It appears that my left front spring has de-arched more than the right--now that there are nice springy springs in the back that problem shows up quite nicely. So my project next week is to install new front springs. That should even things out.

New springs in front today. I got stock style reversed eye springs. I opted against the mono leaf ones because of clearance between the engine and axle. The installation was really simple--direct replacement. The ride up front is lots better now. Overall I'd say the truck rides very well--it's not as smooth as my Mustang, but for a 49 year old truck it's fantastic
